Separate the communal door from your own lock
In a converted or managed building, the street door and flat door may have different locks and different people responsible for them. If your key works at one but not the other, say so. For a communal fault, have the managing agent or responsible person's details available rather than assuming a private lock change will solve access for everyone.
Describe the whole entrance
A nightlatch and a separate mortice lock can behave differently on the same door. Explain which key is giving trouble and whether the door has simply shut or been locked. If the entrance catches or needs unusual pressure to close, mention that too. The condition of the door can matter as much as the lock itself.

Choose the help you need
Before you call
Have your postcode ready and explain whether the door opens, whether the key turns and whether you can secure the property. For shared buildings, tell us about concierge arrangements. An adult authorised to request the work should be available.
We discuss availability and the quotation before proceeding. Read our guide to locksmith quotes for the questions worth asking.
